It is colorless solid isomer of phthalic acid and terephthalic acid normally used for making important polymers e.g. fire-resistant material Nomex. It is mixed with terephthalic acid to make resin bottles for drinks. The high performance polymer polybenzimidazole is produced from isophthalic acid.
